According to the National Police Agency, the number of items that have been handed in to Police stations has more than doubled from 12.72 million in 2007 to 27.96 million in 2016.
This increase is thought to have come about due to the increase in smart phone use number of tourists visiting the country who leave unwanted items behind.
To counteract the problem, the 1899 Lost Property Act was replace in 2007 which gives Police permission to halve the period of time in which lost items must be stored. Most items are kept for a period of 3 months, however, cheaper items such as clothes and umbrellas are kept for just two weeks before they are donated or sold on.
